Do acoustic panels actually work? What to treat, and what is a waste of money
You have seen the wall of grey foam wedges behind every studio photo. The pitch is simple: stick these up and your room sounds professional. So do acoustic panels actually work, or is it a hundred quid of egg-carton cosplay? The honest answer: the right treatment genuinely transforms a room, but most of what gets bought is the wrong thing, in the wrong place, for a problem it cannot solve.
The most expensive misunderstanding: treatment is not soundproofing
Before anything else, clear this up, because it wastes more money than any other mistake. Acoustic panels change how sound behaves inside the room: they soak up reflections and echo so what you hear is cleaner. They do not stop sound getting in or out. That is soundproofing, a completely different job that needs mass, sealing and decoupling, not foam. You can line every wall with panels and still hear next door's TV through the plasterboard. So if your goal is to stop the rest of the house hearing your system, panels are the wrong purchase entirely.
The big one: thin foam does almost nothing for bass
Here is the one that empties wallets. Thin foam, the wedge tiles and egg-crate stuff sold everywhere, only absorbs the higher frequencies, roughly above 500 Hz. It does almost nothing to bass. Which means the exact problem most people are trying to fix, a boomy low end, is the one thin foam physically cannot touch. Those little foam triangles marketed as "bass traps" are the worst offender: too small and too light to absorb low frequencies at all. And egg cartons, a stubborn internet legend, do even less than foam. If you covered a room in foam and the bass is still boomy, that is not bad luck. It is physics.
What actually absorbs bass
Bass has long wavelengths, and long wavelengths need thick, dense material to absorb. In practice that means rigid fibreglass or mineral wool (rockwool) panels, genuinely thick (think 10 cm and up, with more being better), placed in the corners, where bass energy piles up. A 10 cm fibreglass panel comfortably out-performs 10 cm of foam. Density and airflow resistance are what matter, not the pointy shape. Two things stretch their performance further: leave an air gap behind the panel by floating it off the wall, and run your thickest absorption floor to ceiling in the corners. Where space is tight, tuned membrane traps can do a lot in a smaller footprint, but they are a built device, not foam.
Where panels genuinely earn their money: reflections
None of this means panels are pointless. Used correctly they are transformative, and their most reliable job is taming early reflections. Find the spots with the mirror trick: sit in your listening seat, have someone slide a mirror along the side wall, and wherever you can see a speaker in it, that is a point where sound bounces to your ears a moment after the direct sound, smearing the stereo image. An absorptive panel there sharpens clarity and focus straight away. The side walls and the ceiling point above your head are the high-value spots. This is the treatment that genuinely pays off in a normal listening room.
You can absolutely overdo it
More is not better. Because thin panels kill treble far more easily than bass, covering every surface leaves you with a room that is dead-sounding up top and still boomy down low, the worst of both worlds. The goal is not an anechoic chamber, it is balance. Treat first reflection points and corners first, aim for meaningful rather than total coverage, and stop when the room sounds clear rather than lifeless.
So, what is a waste of money?
- Egg cartons. A myth. They look like foam and do almost nothing.
- Thin foam bought to fix bass. Wrong tool for that frequency, full stop.
- The little foam corner "bass traps." Marketing, not absorption.
- Carpet and heavy curtains as a bass cure. They help the highs, not the lows.
- One or two panels expecting a transformed room. Coverage matters.
- Any of it, bought before you know your room's actual problem.
The order that actually saves money
- Move things first. Speaker and seat placement is free and fixes more bass problems than any panel. Always the first move.
- Treat corners for boom. Thick, dense bass absorption where the low end collects.
- Treat first reflections for clarity. Absorption at the mirror points on side walls and ceiling.
- Only buy what your room needs. Not a kit off a checklist.
That last point is where budgets leak. Bass buildup in the corners and reflections off the walls are completely different problems with completely different fixes, and treating the wrong one is money gone. Before you spend, it is worth knowing which you actually have. A careful listen and the mirror trick will point you in the right direction, and measuring the room will tell you outright, but either way: spend on the problem you have, not the one the foam advert says you have.
