Room EQ: what it can fix, and what it cannot

Room EQ is sold as the magic button: measure, click, flat response, done. It is genuinely useful, and it is also the most over-promised tool in audio. EQ does one job brilliantly and several jobs not at all, and knowing which is which saves you from the mistake almost everyone makes, and from wasting money and amplifier power along the way.

What EQ actually does

An equaliser changes the frequency response of the signal on its way to your speakers, turning some frequencies up and others down. Point it at a room's boomy bass peak and it can pull that peak down convincingly. That part is real: for taming peaks, especially low ones, EQ is an excellent complement to moving your speakers and treating the room.

This is the single most important thing to understand about room correction. A bass peak is energy piling up, so you can simply turn it down. A null is the opposite: a spot where the speaker's own sound arrives, bounces off a wall, and cancels itself out. Now watch what happens if you try to "fix" a null by boosting that frequency. You send more energy to the speaker, but that extra energy also feeds the reflection that is doing the cancelling, so it cancels straight back out. The dip does not move. All you have done is pour power into a hole, stealing headroom and pushing your amp and speaker toward distortion for zero benefit. And these dips are often far deeper and sharper than they look: a gentle-looking 6 dB dip on a rough graph can be a 17 dB canyon in reality, which no sane amount of boost survives. So the rule is absolute: turn peaks down, leave nulls alone.

Cut, don't boost, and go gentle

That leads straight to the safe way to EQ: reduce, rarely boost. Many correction tools now have a "no-boost" mode for exactly this reason, and it is the one to use for bass. Reach for broad, gentle filters rather than surgical spikes, because narrow wiggles in a measurement are often just noise, not real room behaviour. And do not try to level everything perfectly; lowering a peak until it stops bothering you almost always sounds better than flattening it stone dead, which drains the punch out of the bass. Less is more.

It only fixes one seat

Here is the limit the adverts skip. Your EQ setting is the same wherever you sit, but the room's response is different in every seat. So an EQ that flattens things beautifully in your chair can make the sofa beside it worse. Correction only works where the response matches the one you measured. The clever systems, Dirac and Audyssey and the like, measure several positions and settle on a compromise across a seating area, but a compromise is exactly what it is. If one seat has a peak and another has a null at the same frequency, nothing can fix both at once.

It belongs in the bass, not the treble

Room EQ is a bass tool. Below roughly 200 to 500 Hz the room resonates as a whole and EQ can genuinely help. Higher up, what you hear is mostly the speaker's own character and the direct sound, and "correcting" the room's reflections up there tends to sound unnatural and lifeless, because you end up baking the room's echo into the music itself. Leave the mids and treble to the speaker, with the occasional exception of notching a single narrow, ringing resonance.

What EQ cannot touch at all

EQ changes level, not time. It cannot shorten how long a boomy mode rings on, cannot remove a reflection, and cannot tidy up reverberation or the smeared imaging from your side walls. Those are time-domain problems, and they belong to placement and physical treatment. When people say EQ made their room "clearer," what usually happened is they turned down a boomy peak; the underlying ringing is still there.

So where does EQ fit? Last.

Put it together and the order writes itself: move things first, because placement is free and avoids nulls and peaks in the first place; treat the room next, for decay, reflections and the broad problems; and only then reach for EQ to shave down the peaks that remain. EQ is the polish, not the foundation. Used that way it is superb. Used as a first resort, it is a band-aid over problems it was never able to fix.

EQ is the last step, not the first. Move things, treat the room, then cut the peaks that are left, and never boost a null.

And notice what the whole thing hinges on: knowing which of your dips is a peak you can cut and which is a null you must leave alone. Get that one wrong, boost a null, and you make everything worse while running your amp hot for nothing. You cannot tell the two apart by ear, and you cannot tell them apart from a quick glance at a rough graph either. It takes an actual measurement of your room.
